Biography

Dr. Gibson is Professor at the University of British Columbia in Canada. She is a translational scientist who studies how the gut microbiome develops in response to the environmental cues, like dietary patterns, and how this drives immunometabolic responses. She is the co-founder, past Chief Scientific Officer and current non-executive Chief Science Advisor of Melius MicroBiomics (MMB). Her inventions form the basis of the spin off company out of UBC which has licenced the patent out to MMB. Her research group creates and tests genetically engineered microbial medicines to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other chronic diseases in pre-clinical models intended to be developed and commercialized for clinical use.

Dr. Gibson’s research is redefining how diet and the gut microbiome shape immunity and metabolism. Her discoveries reveal how specific dietary fats and environmental factors remodel the intestinal ecosystem, influencing susceptibility to inflammatory and metabolic diseases such as colitis and diabetes. She demonstrated that maternal and early-life nutrition program long-term immune and microbial outcomes, and that a Mediterranean-style lipid blend rich in omega-3s protects against colitis and metabolic dysfunction while supporting remission in ulcerative colitis patients.

Recognizing that most probiotics fail to persist in the gut, Dr. Gibson’s lab engineer microbes with durable colonization capacity or specific functionality for various disease contexts advancing next-generation microbial medicines toward clinical application. Through this translational work, Dr. Gibson bridges nutrition, microbiology, and biotechnology to deliver tangible health innovations.
