Biography
Dr. Christopher J. Neufeld is a Research Scientist at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) – a not-for-profit, registered Canadian charity and a shared campus of the Universities of British Columbia, Victoria, Alberta, Calgary, and Simon Fraser University – where he leads the Kelp RESCUE (Resilient Coastal Underwater Ecosystems) Project. Dr. Neufeld is a broadly trained scientist with 15 years of experience leading collaborative and impactful research in coastal ecosystems. Dr. Neufeld has established collaborations with scientists from federal and provincial agencies (Parks Canada, DFO, FLNRO), non-profits, and First Nations. He is also a member of multiple international marine working groups and has recently authored the COSEWIC Status assessment for Yelloweye Rockfish. Dr. Neufeld regularly speaks about his work on coastal ecology and kelp forest resilience in national and international venues and in the popular media (e.g. CBC’s Quirks and Quarks, NPR’s Science Friday, National Geographic). Prior to his current role, Dr. Neufeld served as the Associate Director Education at the BMSC, Faculty Instructor at the University of Calgary, and regular faculty at Quest University.

Research Interests & Projects
The Kelp RESCUE (Resilient Coastal Underwater Ecosystems) Project is supported by the Ngan Page Family Fund and overseen by the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre to conduct translational research towards innovative solutions for scalable kelp forest restoration.
